conditions for the incumbent's whole time to be devoted to ordinary work.

6.

It is presumed that, in view of the Comptroller and Auditor-General having transferred some of such work to the Colony and of his contemplating some further transference, the amount spent by the Colony on the audit in London will be reduced proportionately.

7.

As regards the appointment of a clerk to assist in the work of Audit of the Railway Accounts, it would appear that the Local Auditor has made out a strong case for the creation of such a temporary post, as well as for the addition to his Department proper. I am satisfied that the work involved cannot be properly done even with such supervision and assistance as could be afforded by the Local Auditor and his present Assistant unless a Railway Assistant is approved in addition to the new clerk referred to in paragraph 4 of this Despatch and I have the honour therefore to recommend that the creation of these posts should receive Your Lordship's sanction.

I have the honour to be,

My Lord,

Your Lordship's most obedient,

humble servant,

Amay

Officer Administering the Govern-ment.
